Evolutionary Ecology
Ensuring our connection to nature does not go extinct.
Who we are
A global ecology consultancy & conservation platform
At Evolutionary Ecology we implement the sustainability and environmentally friendly practices that many of us have come to believe in and champion. We also take an innovative, heavily theory-based approach to solving contemporary environmental issues and advancing conservation science — across the UK, UAE, KSA and globally.
What we offer
Using different approaches for different cultural, geographical, biome and ecosystem contexts, we offer ecosystem and habitat restoration, remediation, enhancement, conservation and mitigation services.
We firmly support restoration but recognise that true restoration is often unrealistic in a modern world — so we offer a blend of restorative and remediative solutions to environmental and ecological degradation.
Much of our work revolves around harnessing ecosystem services: natural flood protection via mangroves, increased pollinator presence supported by chosen habitats, and increased eco-tourism driven by flagship and enigmatic species.

Our charity — Nature for People and People for Nature
Where to donate
Every charitable cause we run sits under the charitable arm of Evolutionary Ecology, Nature for People and People for Nature. Pick an area below and go straight to the donation page you care about. Every arm is anchored to at least one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Species conservation
Flagship recovery projects for the striped hyena, Montagu's harrier, hoopoe and house sparrow — or a split-donation via the Species Fund.
Habitat restoration
Chalk grassland, peatland, mangrove and KSA woodland restoration — or a split-donation via the Habitat Fund.
Company & nature for lonely older people
One-to-one visits, a cup of tea, a chat, and — where wanted — a reconnection with local nature, rooted in Liverpool.
See the Liverpool programme ›Odukwe FC — men's mental health through football
A Sunday-league club giving men a reason to meet up, get out and stay fit while battling mental health challenges. Sustainability-first from the ground up.

In depth
Nature-based solutions & niche services
We adopt nature-based solutions inspired by the natural world and the ecosystem services it provides. For example, we advise on growing non-edible cover crops next to edible crops to attract more pollinators or deter pests.
Ecologically informed agriculture
We use ecological principles to enhance agroecosystems, help farms diversify their income, increase self-sufficiency, increase resilience — all while benefiting nature.
Safaris & zoological collections
These sites house taxa that are often functionally or entirely extinct within the wider region, or are analogous through close relatedness or convergent evolution to species that once roamed the land. As a result they offer unique opportunities for symbiotic relationships, ecosystem dynamics and new ecological niches for otherwise excluded species. We believe safaris should be studied further and enhanced to boost biodiversity — giving visitors a chance to experience nature in action while contributing to the conservation of extant native wildlife.
University campuses
Campuses often have magnificent grounds that are home to abundant wildlife — but are frequently neglected or actively degraded by non-native or monoculture planting. We advise on how to avoid this while still maintaining aesthetically pleasing grounds, and offer environmental students the opportunity to contribute through internships on baseline surveys and ecologically informed gardening.
Critical Habitat Screening & Assessments
We determine whether a site should be designated as Critical (highly important) Habitat. For projects financed by institutions such as HSBC that are part of the IFC, this is often a legal requirement. We also use this methodology as a proactive scientific conservation approach — surveying likely critical sites and publishing findings to push for formal and legal protection.
City & town landscaping
We offer design and maintenance consultancy to ensure towns and cities support and boost ecological function and biodiversity — including planting schemes that reduce flood risk or reduce the susceptibility of areas to pests and invasive species.
Local Opportunities
Our scheme to give locals in cities and towns a chance to contribute to self-sufficiency and sustainable practices — growing local food, producing local honey, raising chickens for local eggs. We advocate for using derelict land and brownfield sites, enhancing their habitat value for native biodiversity in the process.
Behavioural & sub-specific biodiversity
Our work in increasing biodiversity in bio-homogeneous urban areas is not limited to species — it includes behaviours, phenotypes, adaptations and subspecies. For example, providing multiple nesting opportunities (cavities and abandoned rabbit warrens) for the Tawny Owl.
Ecological research
We offer research services particularly concerning ecosystem dynamics, invasion ecology, intra- and inter-specific competition, facilitation, symbiotic relationships and ethology.
We aim to help advance the world we live in to meet all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and are keen to collaborate with other consultancies, construction companies, landowners, farmers, councils, universities and NGOs.
